We Welcome your dogs like old friends

As dog lovers ourselves, we know how important it is for you to bring your four-legged best friend on holiday. For many owners, and the dogs themselves, the thought of kenneling is unbearable. We don’t like the idea of our pets being cooped up all day, while many dogs suffer from separation anxiety.

They have no idea why you’ve put them in a strange place and left them alone for days on end. It’s for this reason that we have made being dog friendly such a key part of our North Devon holiday accommodation business.

But allowing dogs to stay at luxury five-star pet friendly accommodation in Devon like The Old Shippon is not just about letting them in. Instead, we do all we can to make the time you spend on holiday together the most fun and enjoyable it can be.

For a start, there’s a lovely welcome pack for your dog, and then we’ll tell you all about the brilliant walks, days out, pub visits and exploration locally that you can enjoy together. It’s anyone’s guess who will enjoy the holiday the most, you or your pet!

Your Devon holiday accommodation dog welcome pack

Your dog will receive an enthusiastic welcome when you arrive. We’ll be pleased to meet you as well, obviously! While you’re welcome to bring any of these items with you, we’ll provide the following doggie welcome pack on arrival:
  • A dog bed for cosy snoozing, which will be essential after all the walking you’ll be enjoying.

  • Dog bowls (for water and food).

  • A large dog crate should your dog be used to sleeping in one. We recognise it’s not always practical to transport your own when you’re already packing a lot of things.

  • Bucket and brush for washing. We all know a dog will enjoy doing things that make it grubby. Some dogs even enjoy being washed afterwards (okay, not many!).
  • Towels.

  • Sofa throws. We ask that your dogs don’t jump on the beds or furniture, but we know what they’re like, so this is a precaution!

  • Poo bags and scooper, which are kept in the bin cupboard for your convenience.

Short of providing food and toys, this little lot should be all that your dog needs to enjoy its stay in our luxury dog-friendly accommodation in Devon.

Great dog days out in North Devon

Now your pooch is happily settled in at The Old Shippon on Dunsdon Farm, you’ll be eager to find out just what treats are in store for you locally. You’ll be keen to see all the natural beauty that the North Devon and North Cornwall coast, which is only six miles away, has to offer, the long and carefree walks, dog-friendly pubs for refreshment and so much more.

We’ll tell you all you need to know from our years of experience, or you can read some of our other articles to discover beaches and pubs that are dog friendly. There are lovely walks to experience right here on the farm doorstep, or you can travel a few miles away to the coast.

Great Days Out In North Devon

Walks from the farm

Before you head out, it’s important to mention that you have your own access to your dog-friendly self-catering accommodation and enclosed garden, so you don’t strictly have to go anywhere! But that’s not much fun. Instead, you can use your five-star holiday accommodation as a base from which to explore.

Just 200 yards from the farm is our very own private woodland, set in 23 beautiful acres. It’s securely fenced, so you’re free to roam around to your heart’s content in solitude and safety. See how many species of birds and butterflies you can spot! The peaceful woodland is adjacent to the Dunsdon National Nature Reserve, which is a haven for rare flora and fauna. The reserve has some excellent walks, but you’ll need to keep your dog on a lead here.
Within half a mile of the farm, you’ll find the peaceful Bude Canal. This makes for a gorgeous walk which is also nice and flat, without any stiles to clamber over. The canal-side walk boasts plenty of wildlife, as you’d expect, giving you plenty to admire as you exercise your dog. You might think it an odd place for a canal, seemingly miles away from the industrial heartland of Britain. But the Bude Canal was completed in 1823 to carry lime-bearing sand for use in agricultural fertiliser.

There’s also a fine network of public footpaths all around Dunsdon Farm, from which you can set off on longer hikes.

You’ll no doubt also want to go further afield to explore all that North Devon has to offer. We’ve put together a list of great dog-friendly beaches in North Devon and Cornwall, all within easy driving distance.

Some of the beaches have restrictions at certain times of the year when your dog will have to remain on the lead. But a lot of the huge, wide beaches have areas where your pet can run free, enjoying the water. It might be an idea to take a towel from our dog welcome pack with you!
